One of the greatest
questions ever asked may have been asked in derision. It was asked
by Pilate of Jesus only hours before His crucifixion. The question:
“What is truth?” (John 18:38). Today, like the days of old so many
are unwilling to acknowledge that truth even exists… so many believe
that truth is relevant and must be decided by the individual.
Many like Pilate are looking truth in the face
and cannot see it. You see the Bible reveals in John 17:17 that the
“Word is truth.” The
Bible student then reads John 1:1-5 and finds: “In the beginning was
the Word, and the
Word was with God, and
the Word was God. The
same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and
without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life;
and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in
darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not” (John 1:1-5). Note
in this text the “Word” is referred to as having been in the
beginning…as having been with God and finally as having been God.
What or who could this “Word” be? John 1:14 clearly answers that
question: “And the Word
was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the
glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and
truth (John 1:14). Answer these questions from the text: Who or what
was made flesh? Who or what dwelled among us? Who or what was the
only begotten of the Father? The Answers: Jesus…Jesus…Jesus
Back to our original thought, who was Pilate
facing when he asked “What is truth?”in John 18:38? …Jesus. Who was
Jesus in John 1:1-5; 14?... the Word. Now what was truth in John
17:17?... the Word…AKA… Jesus.
Here it is… Pilate was looking truth right in the
face and did not know it! I say again, many like Pilate are looking
truth in the face and cannot see it.
Truth is important whether you realize it or not.
It is truth that sets us free. “And ye shall know the truth, and the
truth shall make you free”(John 8:32).
